"Make Hay Not War"

This CD single - Make Hay Not War (Dead From The Waist Down) - was a planned release that didn't get past the promotional disc stage. Planned release date was the 17th March 2003 in support of the anti-war movement. The track was actually released on the album Never Mind The Bullocks in 2002.

The Band Line-Up:

At the time of the recording of this single The Wurzels consisted of Pete Budd, Tommy Banner, John Morgan and Jai Howe. This single saw the first appearance of Jai Howe. Jai had recently replaced Dave Wintour. Jai had played with the band in the mid-eighties for a while although this was his first appearance on a single release.

The Track:

Following the release of Never Mind the Bullocks, Ere's The Wurzels in 2002, The Wurzels planned to release a third single off the album (two previous singles on the album 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Come On Santa!' had been issued prior to the album's release). They decided on the recording of the Catonia song 'Make Hay Not War (Dead From The Waist Down)' - 'in support of the Anti-War Movement' according to the disc. The single was produced by part-time Wurzel Louie Nicastro.

At the same time as the disc was due for release the USA and the UK were finally setting a deadline for an invasion of Iraq to bring about the downfall of Saddam Hussain: to prevent any political problems the release was pulled. So there never was a release of the single, but publicity CD versions had already been pressed and distributed to reviewers and radio stations. As a result, this promo CD is now very rare and highly collectable.

The Disc & Sleeve:

As can be seen the CD itself was a simple silver with black font. The insert was a single printed piece of paper giving basic information needed for promotional reasons.

"Make Hay Not War" - Song Lyrics

  • The sun is shining, we should be making hay
But we're dead from the waist down
    Like in Californ-i-a
Victory is empty, (it's so empty) there are lessons in defeat
But we're dead from the waist down
We are sleeping on our feet
We stole the songs from birds and trees
Bought us time on Easy Street
Now our paths they never meet, no
We chose to court and flatter greed
Ego disposability, I caught a glimpse
    And it aint me
  • (Chorus)
Make hay not war, make hay not war
Make hay not war, or else we're done for
    And we're D, from the W down

  • There's no contracts binding, no back seam beyond repair
But when you're dead from the waist down
You're too far gone to even care
We stole the songs from birds and trees
Bought us time on Easy Street
Now our paths they never meet, no
We chose to court and flatter greed
Ego disposability, I caught a glimpse
    And it aint me
  • (Repeat Chorus x 3)
  • [Instrumental]
