Andy White Wurzels session drummer (1975-1977)

Andy White was born in 1930 in Glasgow. He was a renowned studio drummer in the 1950s and 1960s in London, recording with artists such as Billy Fury, Marlene Dietrich, Herman's Hermits, Bert Weedon, Frankie Laine, Chuck Berry and Tom Jones (that's Andy's drumming on 'It's Not Unusual').

He is perhaps best known for playing drums on The Beatles first single, Love Me Do in 1962. Andy was in fact on the 7" single version released in the United States. He also played drums on the b-side, 'P.S. I Love You'. Indeed he was very close to replacing Ringo Starr as The Beatles drummer at the time. Drafted in by George Martin, Andy played the drums on Love Me Do, while Ringo stood by and played the tambourine. Since Ringo had only recently replaced Pete Best, he must have thought his days were numbered as well.

The Wurzels Archives

Although never a true member of The Wurzels (we have no record of him playing at any of their gigs), Andy was drafted in to provide some of the drumming on the 1975 'The Wurzels Are Scrumptious!' album along with Dougie Wright and Tony Fennell, and rather cryptically both are credited 'for their support' on the 1976 'Combine Harvester' album He appears to have done all the drumming on the 1977 'Golden Delicious' album.

Andy married the British Decca artist, Lyn Cornell, who later became a member of The Pearls, and later married Thea White, who supplied the voice of 'Muriel' on the Cartoon Network show, Courage the Cowardly Dog! He is currently living in New Jersey, USA teaching beginner and intermediate drum lessons. He is also an accomplished Pipe Band Highland drummer and is an active and popular drumming judge for the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association (EUSPBA); he was even a drum instructor for the New York City Department of Corrections Emerald Pipe Band! Although we have no record of his ever playing live with The Wurzels, he has played drums at concerts for Rod Stewart.
